Veszprém

Veszprém

Veszprém, the capital of Veszprém County, is the town of Queens. The historic past of the town derives from the time of the Hungarian conquest when Veszprém was in the ownership of the regal family. It earned the title ‘the town of Queens’ due to the wife of king St. Stephen I, named Gizella, when it also started to develop as one of the major centres of the Catholic Church. The historical centre of Veszprém is the castle, where the clerical buildings and museums, as well as the exhibition halls and galleries illustrating contemporary art complete each other in harmony.

Veszprém is a traditional and a modern town at the same time, its different parts offer visitors different climates. The reconstructed pedestrian area of Veszprém, named Kossuth Street, is popular among the local residents and tourists alike: there are countless shops, restaurants, cafés, offices and institutions in an area of relatively small measures. The tallest building of Veszprém, the 20-storey high-rise tower, is surrounded by some tiny and well-sized squares, where sport events, contests and fairs await visitors settled around statues, fountains and wells.

Veszprém is characterised by a lively cultural life throughout the year. While in winter time the performances of three theatres and the concerts of Hangvilla will attract viewers, from spring to autumn many festivals will entertain not only the local residents but also guest visitors. Among these the most well-known ones are the following: Contemporary Dance Festival, Street Music Festival, the music programs of Veszprémfest, the classic Auer festival and Old Music Festival.  In addition, a number of visitors are attracted by the zoo, named Kittenberger Kalman Plant- and Wildlife Park, well-known across Europe, which has recently become a day-long programme.  In addition, parks and green areas are popular places to visit. Furthermore, the proximity of the Bakony Hills and Lake Balaton offer opportunities for relaxation throughout the day.

In addition to hiking tours, both the university and the town provides a wealth of opportunities to those who are interested in sports. Besides the most popular sports, such as swimming, ball games or tennis, our students will also be offered special sport experiences, such as wall climbing, martial arts, and the competition between the students of the university faculties, mainly due to the increasingly popular sport event called Balaton Regatta.
