The Department of Applied Linguistics was founded in September 1993. It offers different courses related to psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, applied linguistics, child language development, bi- and multilingualism, second language acquisition, language policy and linguistic rights.

We have been running an Applied linguistics program since September 2002, which was modified in 2009 to meet the requirements of the Bologna Process. Since 2016 we have been running our Applied Linguistics Master's program in the English language, as well, and this attracts an increasing number of international students.

There is a significant research activity at the Department in the following subject areas:

  • Bi- and multilingualism
  • Language policy
  • Linguistic rights
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Second language acquisition
  • Sociolinguistics

The Department publishes The Hungarian Journal of Applied Linguistics, an ERIH+ journal (http://alkalmazottnyelvtudomany.hu/en/home2/). We organize the annual Summer School of Psycholinguistics, and publish edited volumes of applied linguistics. We have also edited five books published by Multilingual Matters:

In 2015, Prof. Kees de Bot published his ‘A History of Applied Linguistics’ (Routledge)

The staff of the Department founded and elaborated the PhD program of the Multilingualism Doctoral School, which was launched in 2016.

Based on our scientific activity and research results, we elaborated the Pannon Language Examination System, and the headquarters of the language exam was also a part of the Department from 2002 to 2018.
